Dark oil products are opaque dark products that are obtained from oil refining and that comprise heavy residues of primary and secondary oil processing. They include fuel oil, tar, bitumen.
Fuel oil is a deep-brown product, the residue of oil or secondary oil processing products obtained after the process of fractionation performed at the boiling temperature. It is used as fuel and raw material in the process of manufacturing of coke, bitumen and lubricating oil.
- Tar is a residue that is produced during the process of reducing of different fractions under the conditions of atmospheric pressure and under vacuum. It is used in the process of manufacturing of roofing, road and construction bitumen, lubricating oil, high-carbon coke, combustion gas and motor fuel.
- Bitumen is a resinous or solid product that is a mixture of hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Oil bitumen is artificial and it shouldn’t be confused with natural one. Bitumen is a cementitious matter that is needed for conducting different kinds of operations and for many manufacturing processes. There exists construction, road, isolation, roofing bitumen and high-melting bitumen which is used in special operations.

Construction oil bitumen is obtained from oxidation of oil refining residues and their asphalt and oil production extracts mixtures and also from compounding of oxidized and unoxidized above mentioned products. Roofing bitumen is a combustible substance with flash point of not less than 240 °С and self-ignition temperature of not lower than 300°С. It is obtained the same way as construction bitumen – from oxidation of products of straight distillation of petroleum and their asphalt and oil production extracts mixtures. Depending on the usage of roofing oil bitumen there exist the following types:

Liquid road bitumen is used as a cementitious material in the process of road paving, construction of foundations and in some other processes.
Depending on the speed of structure formation, liquid bitumen is divided into two types:
- medium-curing one obtained from deliquation of viscous road bitumen with the help of hydrocarbon oils (SG). It is used for the construction of road paving and lightweight type of road paving as well as for foundations in all road building climate zones of the country;
- slowly-curing one obtained from deliquation of viscous road bitumen with the help of hydrocarbon oils (MG) and obtained from residual or partially oxidized oil products or their mixtures (MGO). It is used for obtaining cold asphalt concrete and for construction of the lightweight type of road paving and foundations in II–V road building climate zones.
Liquid bitumen is produced in accordance with requirements of GOST 11955-82 and its physicochemical parameters satisfy all the requirements and norms.

- Fuel oil of type I – mass fraction S in %, less than 0.5
- Fuel oil of type II - 0,5 < S < 1,0
